Kicked Out for Coming Out: How The Ripe Avocado Supports Stonewall Housing

Our values at The Ripe Avocado are rooted in giving back and supporting those who are underrepresented, which is why we are proud to support Stonewall Housing’s winter appeal, Kicked Out for Coming Out.

Stonewall Housing is the leading national charity supporting LGBTQ+ people of all ages who live in the UK and are experiencing homelessness or living in an unsafe environment. This campaign sheds light on the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals who face family rejection simply for being themselves - a reality that often leads to homelessness. Winter is already the most dangerous time to experience homelessness, but for LGBTQ+ individuals, it can also be the loneliest season.

With an estimated 61,000 LGBTQ+ people at risk of homelessness across the UK, Stonewall Housing remains one of the few organisations offering specialised support for homeless LGBTQ+ individuals of all ages. However, the demand far exceeds available resources, underscoring the need for ongoing support to expand these life-saving services.

This year, in place of traditional client gifts, we are funding 14 nights of safe accommodation and providing travel vouchers to someone with nowhere else to go.

This cause holds personal significance as our founder Jay’s mum is a retired drug and alcohol support worker for homeless young people. We are also committed to offering long-term support, including work and work experience opportunities at our events, ensuring we contribute not just financially but also through sharing our knowledge and expertise.
